The family council – how children learn co-determination and responsibility

Groß (Familienrat)

A place that connects – not teaches.
Arguments about screen time, chaos when brushing teeth, frustration about tidying up – many everyday conflicts are repetitive. Parents are annoyed, children feel left out. What is often missing is not the rule – but the common framework in which it arises.

A family council can be just that: a fixed, unifying place where everyone is heard, solutions are developed together and real responsibility is allowed to grow.

🧩 What is a family council?

A family council is a regular meeting – weekly, fortnightly or as required – at which all family members talk about how they live together.
It’s not about talking through problems or having to vote on everything democratically. It’s about finding solutions together, defusing conflicts and practising co-determination.

This is how children learn: My voice counts. I can help shape things. I am taken seriously.

🛠️ How does a family council work?

Fixed time: e.g. every Sunday evening after dinner.
Ritual at the start: a candle, a greeting or a moment of thanks.
Agenda with structure: e.g. round of praise – problems – suggestions – planning.
Moderation (alternating): children can also lead!
Binding results: What is tried out, what stays, what doesn’t?

💬 Which topics are suitable?

  • Who takes on which tasks in everyday life?
  • What do children want from their parents – and vice versa?
  • How do we deal with media time?
  • What has been nice recently – and what has been difficult?

🌱 Why is it worth it?

Because children don’t just learn responsibility – they are allowed to live it.
You notice: I am heard. I help shape things. And that doesn’t just change behavior – it changes the relationship.

A family council is not a magic bullet. But it is a powerful, respectful space for development – for everyone involved.
